During my travels in Bali this winter I wandered into an ancient temple in Ubud – the Saraswati temple. Goddess Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of Knowledge and wisdom. The surroundings were beautiful, calm and spiritual – a perfect place for inner reflection. In the temple courtyard was a pond with sublime lotus flowers in full blossom.

It made me think the philosophy of lotus. It is the most beautiful flower which will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud — the obstacles of life and the disappointment / pain it gives. The mud speaks of the common ground we humans share, no matter what stage in our life. … Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles. The greatest entrepreneurs, inventors, musicians, artists, writers experienced the mud and they made this mud a path for their lotus to blossom. Don’t be afraid of obstacles – they are a gift that nurtures the core of your inner strength.
